After the release of the BRZ STI at the 2011 LA Auto Show, Subaru mentioned to Car and Driver that the next WRX and WRX STI line up will have a turbo version of the FB20. Even though, “Impreza” has been dropped from the new rally car title, the FB engine also calls home in the 2012 Impreza. The new, lighter, 2.0L, turbo engine could potentially output more than the current 265 HP WRX and 305 HP WRX STI.
Unfortunately we do not expect to be driving the WRX and WRX STI for a year or two. We can only assume the more powerful, smaller and lighter, unique platform is even more performance oriented then its predecessors. This will make our AWD fans happy, since the RWD BRZ has taken current the spot light. It looks like the BRZ will stick to the drift events, while we hope Subaru feels this new car is more competitive and will return to the WRC!
Speaking of the BRZ… It has a new “FA20″ engine. Does this mean that the FB is designed for a turbo, while the FA is not? Check back to find out!
